I was so hungry all of the time and I remember my mommy waking me up early on Saturday mornings so we could have breakfast from a church who served it under the bridge with other homeless people. Sometimes we got to share a bed and other times we slept with other people in a big room at the homeless shelter. It was always scary. I wore the same clothes every day because mommy said we couldn’t carry too much while we walked around looking for food and a place to sleep. The shelters were so cold and their blankets were very thin, but it was way better than the nights outside. I cried when my mommy told me that we finally had a home to live in and that I would never be cold and hungry again.

Parents often need help completing school or job training. They usually need employment. Children need counseling to overcome trauma, or intensive tutoring to help get them to their grade level. And of course, the health and safety of the children must be a paramount concern.

Communities and churches are part of the solution. So are affordable housing and job training programs. Ultimately, we all have a role to play in ensuring a safe and healthy future for children and families. And you can help today.
